So today we got up super early so we could drive into downtown Philly early. We wanted to be at Independence Hall visitor center by 8:30 to get tickets for the earliest tour at IH possible! We pretty easily get up, grab some breakfast and head out. We are on 95 at 7:33 (
at least according to Aaron!). And we knew we would hit traffic. But by the time he dropped me off outside IH to get tickets it was 8:23!
EIGHT TWENTY-THREE! Insanity!
**Before I go on, I want to boast that we worked out last night bc we got to the hotel so early. I know that might not seem like
too much however, on our trip last year we had
THREE successful workouts. Last nights= 3! What what?!!??**
Anyways, back to IH. So I get in line, thinking yes. 9am tour here we come. Um no. I get to the front and I said: "Two tickets for your earliest tour!" And the guys behind the counter says, "That's at 10." I was like are you freaking serious? But of course I took them. Forget about the money Blaz just went and put in the meter. We will just add more right?
So in the meantime of aimless wandering we find ourselves in Washington Square. And for those who do not know thousands of people are buried under Washington Square. When people died in the war or in town, they would just literally toss their bodies over there. Aaron claims it is no different than a cemetary, which is true.
However, at least I know whose area I am walking on then you know? Bodies just piled up where you walk.
After a little more wandering, we head to our 10am tour. We tried to sneak in with the 9:45 group, but this old man who worked there was onto us. We wound up going to the East building where they kept replicas of the Declaration of Independence (
which after going to DC twice and being 0/2 will be the only DoI I ever get to see apparently!) and the Constitution. So we go into our 10am tour and it was ok. Nothing special. We were expecting the rooms to be a bit bigger since you know, they wrote the DoI and Constitution in there! However, this was not the case.
With some time to kill before our meter was up, we walked to the National Constitution Building. Since it was wide open and no one was paying attn we may have just slipped in a little. :) We did see the Constitution and to be honest it was a building with
too much open space. $13??? Happy we did not pay that! Walking around we happened to see Ben Franklin's grave and we happened to see the Philadelphia Mint. We breezed in quickly to see how coins were made. Now I wanted to walk to the LOVE statue in the one park, but it was too far and our meter was on its end. Little did I know, we happened to be right by it the day before! So I got a drive by picture only later.
So we headed out to Max's cheesesteak place, reccommended by Aaron's friend Matt. It was in the ghetto! I am a fast eater, and I can tell you that was the fastest I have ever eaten. I wanted to know my car was still there. But back to the important part-- the cheesesteak. Holy mother of God. It was delicious and it even had mayo! I was doubting this, but Matt told us YES YOU HAVE TOO! So we did. And I will never, ever regret it!
After our feast from the east, we headed to Eastern State Penitentiary. I thought this would be a quick one. Ummmm hello almost TWO hours! It was amazing. They even gave you an audio tour, led by actor Steve Buscemi. It was definitely worth every penny. We saw some really cool stuff on this tour. I reccommend it to anyone who ever goes into the city. It was cooler than Independence Hall.
95 on the way back was only kind of fierce. I literally just looked down the whole time.
No, I wasn't driving! We came back, a little tired from our early wake up. Aaron took a nap or two. I did homework. I am even more caught up in my one class! Two weeks ahead. WHile in the other, I am just where I need to be. We caught a great workout-- which is cut out by our later meal.
We hit the casino. By signign up for their players card, we got $10 in free slot play each. Yea.... that did not turn into much. Except Aaron was up to $27 and lost it all. This was the talk for the night.
Finally, we had a terrible dinner-- well good-- but not healthy and now just here in the room. Tomorrow we head to NY for three days of Shenanigans! I cannot wait!! So much to see!
Belows pics are from Independence Hall, BF's grave, and us on our tour of the Penitentiary!
